Where to Watch How to Train Your Dragon: Every Film, Runtime and US Option

By StarCelebia Editorial Team Updated Streaming last checked:

Short answer

As of October 30, 2026, we could confirm US rent and buy options but no subscription stream. Google Play rents all four films, including the 2025 remake, for $3.99 and sells each for $14.99. Apple TV also lists all four. The live-action sequel is scheduled for June 11, 2027.

There are four How to Train Your Dragon feature films so far: the DreamWorks Animation trilogy from 2010, 2014 and 2019, and Universal’s live-action remake from 2025. A live-action sequel has a date in 2027. Below is every US option we could confirm on the stores’ own pages on October 30, 2026, along with the watch order, runtimes and what is actually known about the next film.

Where to watch How to Train Your Dragon in the US

This is the full picture in one table: order, year, runtime and every way to watch that we verified on the service’s own US page. Runtimes are the BBFC’s timings for the standard cinema release of each film, rounded to the nearest minute. Google Play prices are what each US page showed on October 30, 2026.

# Film Year Runtime (min) Google Play (US) Apple TV (US) Subscription streaming (US)

Apple TV’s US web pages list all four films but show no prices, so open the Apple TV app to see current rent and buy options.

Can you buy the animated trilogy as a set?

Yes. Google Play sells the How To Train Your Dragon Trilogy, and its buy button shows $28.99. Buying the three films one at a time at $14.99 each (the price on each film’s page) comes to $44.97, so the bundle’s listed price is $15.98 lower. The single-film buttons are labeled HD or 4K, but the trilogy button does not name a format, so check which version you are getting before you pay. The bundle is buy-only; there is no trilogy rental.

Apple TV also lists a How To Train Your Dragon Trilogy bundle on the pages for all three animated films. A separate “How to Train Your Dragon 2-Movie Collection” appears on the pages for the 2010 film and the 2025 live-action film. Apple’s web pages did not show bundle prices or a full contents list, so confirm both in the app before you buy.

Is How to Train Your Dragon streaming on Netflix, Peacock or Paramount+?

We could not confirm any of them, so we are not listing a subscription home. Here is what happened when we tried:

  • Peacock: its US title pages for the animated films redirected us to a “not available” page, which says the device must be physically in the US.
  • Paramount+: its site refused our automated check.
  • Netflix, Hulu and Disney+: their pages sent us to sign-in or “unavailable in your region” screens.

Streaming deals change, so search the app you already pay for first. If the film is not there, the rent and buy options above are the ones we verified.

How to Train Your Dragon movies in order

The three animated films are a single story, told in release order. The 2025 film is not a fourth chapter. The BBFC describes it as a live-action remake of the animated film, which means it starts the story over.

US theatrical dates and ratings come from Rotten Tomatoes. Runtimes are from the BBFC.

# Film US release Runtime (min) US rating US distributor
1 How to Train Your Dragon Mar 26, 2010 98 PG Paramount Pictures
2 How to Train Your Dragon 2 Jun 13, 2014 102 PG 20th Century Fox
3 How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World Feb 22, 2019 104 PG Universal Pictures
4 How to Train Your Dragon (live action) Jun 13, 2025 125 PG Universal Pictures
5 How to Train Your Dragon 2 (live action) Jun 11, 2027 (scheduled) TBA TBA Universal Pictures

Total: the animated trilogy runs about 304 minutes (5 hours 4 minutes). Add the 2025 remake and you reach about 429 minutes, or 7 hours 9 minutes.

Each animated film had a different US distributor: the AFI Catalog credits Paramount Pictures for the 2010 film, and Rotten Tomatoes lists the others. The BBFC timings also match the US runtimes on the Apple TV pages (1 hr 38 min, 1 hr 42 min, 1 hr 44 min and 2 hr 5 min), so the table works for planning a marathon.

Which order should a first-time viewer pick?

For the full story, watch the animated trilogy in order: 2010, 2014, 2019. That is the only complete version of Hiccup and Toothless’s story on screen right now. The Rotten Tomatoes synopsis for the second film opens five years after the first, and The Hidden World brings in the Light Fury, so skipping ahead leaves gaps.

If you only have one evening, either the 2010 film or the 2025 remake covers the same opening story. Watching both back to back is a good way to compare the two versions, but you will be seeing the same plot twice.

Where do the TV series and specials fit?

DreamWorks also made TV spin-offs. We are listing only the ones with US Apple TV pages we could open, and we could not confirm a subscription home for any of them on a service’s own site.

Title Year What Apple TV’s US page says Where it fits
Dragons 2012 Series based on the 2010 film; the first episode picks up after the movie After the first film
How to Train Your Dragon: Homecoming 2019 21-minute holiday special on the Isle of New Berk, featuring the Light Fury After The Hidden World
Dragons: The Nine Realms 2021 Set 1,300 years after the first film, when dragons are a legend Standalone; watch any time

Last checked: October 30, 2026

None of these are needed to follow the movies. Homecoming is the easiest add-on, since it is short and continues straight from the trilogy’s characters.

Animated vs. live action: what is different?

The 2025 film follows the 2010 story closely, but a few differences are on the record.

  • Length. The remake runs 125 minutes against 98 for the original, per the BBFC, so it is about 27 minutes longer.
  • Cast. Mason Thames plays Hiccup and Nico Parker plays Astrid in live action. Jay Baruchel and America Ferrera voiced those roles in the animated films. Gerard Butler is the link between the two: Rotten Tomatoes notes he reprises his voice role as Stoick the Vast, this time in live action.
  • Same filmmaker. Dean DeBlois co-directed the 2010 film with Chris Sanders, then wrote and directed the remake. At a press event covered by The Hollywood Reporter, DeBlois called the new film “a reimagining that holds quite faithful to the story,” and said it adds depth to character relationships and mythology that the rushed first production skipped past.
  • Rating reasons. Both are rated PG. Rotten Tomatoes lists the original’s rating for intense action, brief mild language and some scary images, and the remake’s for intense action and peril.
  • Intensity. The BBFC’s notes for the remake flag “scary scenes” and say it suggests some people have lost limbs to dragons. Its notes for the 2010 film describe frequent mild threat. Parents of very young children may want to start with the animated version.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2027): what is confirmed

Universal announced the live-action sequel at CinemaCon on April 2, 2025, two months before the first remake opened. Universal’s official page still lists it as “In Theaters June 11, 2027” as of October 30, 2026.

Project Status as of October 30, 2026 Confirmed names
How to Train Your Dragon 2 (live action) Scheduled for US theaters June 11, 2027 Dean DeBlois (director, per Empire), Mason Thames (Hiccup), Nico Parker (Astrid)

Variety reported that the new film is a live-action take on the 2014 animated sequel. Per Variety, the story jumps ahead five years: Hiccup is 20, and he and his friends take on a villain who plans to conquer the world with an army of dragons. THR lists DeBlois, Marc Platt and Adam Siegel as producers of the live-action films.

To prepare, watch the 2014 animated How to Train Your Dragon 2, since the new film retells it. The live-action sequel is not on any store or streaming service yet. We will add it to the tables above once a digital release is announced.

How we checked

On October 30, 2026, we opened each film’s US page on Google Play and the Apple TV store and wrote down only what those pages showed. We also tried the title pages on Peacock, Paramount+, Netflix, Hulu and Disney+. None of them would load from our location or let our check through, so we list no subscription service, even where other guides name one.

One detail for transparency: on October 30, 2026, Apple TV’s US pages for the 2010 and 2014 films displayed a Paramount+ logo, and its pages for the Dragons and Dragons: The Nine Realms series displayed a Peacock logo. That is only what Apple’s pages show. We could not confirm any of these on Paramount+’s or Peacock’s own sites, so they are not in our tables. Treat them as places to search, not confirmed streaming listings.

Runtimes come from the BBFC’s classification records, which list the running time of each version submitted. US release dates and ratings come from Rotten Tomatoes, and the 2027 date comes from Universal’s own page. We used no aggregator sites for availability.
